FAQ Schema & Featured Snippets: Getting Your Answers Cited
How FAQ schema and question-based content help answer engines extract your pages for featured snippets and AI answers — with FAQPage JSON-LD examples and optimization steps.
FAQ schema (FAQPage JSON-LD) is structured data that marks question-answer pairs on a page so search engines and answer engines can extract them reliably. Combined with question-based content and concise direct answers, FAQ schema increases the chance your content is cited in featured snippets and AI-generated answers.
What is FAQPage schema?
FAQPage is a Schema.org type that wraps a list of Question and acceptedAnswer pairs. When implemented as JSON-LD, it gives machines a machine-readable copy of each FAQ that does not depend on HTML parsing. Google may display FAQ rich results for eligible pages.
FAQPage JSON-LD example
A minimal FAQPage block contains @type FAQPage with an array of mainEntity, each a Question with a name and an acceptedAnswer containing text. The text must match the visible answer on the page — do not add questions or answers that are not present in the content a human sees.
Featured snippets and answer extraction
A featured snippet is a concise answer Google displays at the top of results for a query. Answer engines perform a similar extraction. To be selected, your page must clearly answer the question, ideally with a 40-60 word paragraph immediately below the relevant heading, plus supporting detail.
- Identify the question your page answers.
- Write a concise direct answer in the first paragraph.
- Expand with detail, evidence, and examples below.
- Add the question as a heading where natural.
- Implement FAQPage JSON-LD matching the visible Q&A.
When FAQ schema is appropriate
FAQPage schema is appropriate only when the page genuinely contains a FAQ section with question-answer pairs. Do not add FAQ schema to pages without visible FAQs, and do not fabricate questions to trigger rich results. Google may penalize misleading or non-visible FAQ schema.
Not every page needs an FAQ. A pricing page or contact page should not be penalized for lacking one. Match schema to page type and search intent.
How RankoraXPress audits FAQ and AEO
RankoraXPress detects FAQ sections, validates FAQPage JSON-LD, checks for direct-answer patterns, and scores AEO based on page type and intent. It recommends FAQ schema only where the page actually contains question-answer content, avoiding false positives on pages where an FAQ would be unnatural.
