Technical SEO for React: A Developer's Guide
React SPAs have unique SEO challenges. Learn client-side rendering pitfalls, canonicals, sitemaps, structured data, and how to make React apps indexable.
React single-page applications can rank, but only if you handle the technical SEO layer deliberately. The default client-rendered React app is often invisible to crawlers that do not execute JavaScript fully.
The rendering problem
When content is rendered client-side, crawlers may see an empty container until JavaScript executes. Server-side rendering (SSR) or static generation (SSG) ensures the HTML payload contains your content.
Per-route metadata
Each route needs a unique title, meta description, canonical URL, and Open Graph tags. Use a head management approach that mutates the document head on navigation so metadata matches the visible content.
Canonicals and routing
Set a canonical URL on every route to prevent duplicate-content issues from parameter variations or trailing-slash inconsistencies.
Sitemaps and robots
- Generate an XML sitemap listing all indexable routes.
- Maintain a robots.txt that allows valuable content and blocks private routes.
- Exclude search results, admin, and parameter variations from the sitemap.
- Keep lastmod dates accurate, not constantly changing.
Structured data in React
Inject JSON-LD as script tags in the document head per route. Validate each block against Schema.org types. RankoraXPress itself uses per-route Organization, WebPage, BreadcrumbList, FAQPage, and Article schema.
RankoraXPress is built in React and audits its own pages with the same engine it ships to customers.
