The Direct-Answer Pattern: Answer First, Then Elaborate — Writing for Answer Engines
The direct-answer pattern places a 40–60 word paragraph that directly answers the page's primary question immediately below the H1, then elaborates with detail. Answer engines extract that first paragraph, so leading with the answer — not burying it — increases the chance of being cited.

Answer engines do not read the whole page and synthesize; they extract the first passage that clearly answers the query. If the answer is buried three paragraphs into the introduction, it is harder to extract than if it leads.
The 40–60 word target
A self-contained answer of roughly 40–60 words sits in the sweet spot: long enough to be complete, short enough to be returned as a snippet. A reader who reads only that paragraph should understand the answer without the rest of the page.
Then elaborate
After the direct answer, expand with definitions, evidence, examples, and an FAQ. The pattern is answer-first, not tease-first — do not make the reader wait through context before reaching the point.
- Identify the one question the page answers.
- Write a 40–60 word answer as the first paragraph.
- Use the question as a heading where natural.

Frequently asked questions
Should every page have a direct answer?
Educational and informational pages benefit most. A contact or pricing page does not need a long answer section — intent-aware AEO adjusts recommendations by page type.
Is 40–60 words a hard rule?
It is a target, not a law. The goal is a complete, self-contained answer — shorter is fine if complete; longer risks being truncated.
