XML Sitemap Hygiene: Canonical, Indexable, 200 — Keeping It Honest
An XML sitemap should list only canonical, indexable, HTTPS URLs that return HTTP 200. It must exclude redirects, noindex pages, private routes, and duplicate variants so the sitemap, canonical, and robots directives never contradict each other.

A sitemap is a hint, not a command: it tells search engines which URLs you consider important. The value of that hint collapses if the sitemap lists URLs that redirect, carry noindex, or duplicate one another.
Include only canonical 200s
Every <loc> in the sitemap should resolve with a 200 status, carry a self-referencing canonical, and use the final (non-redirecting) form of the URL. Anything that redirects or is non-indexable should be removed, not listed.
Sitemap indexes and child sitemaps
For larger sites, a sitemap index points to multiple child sitemaps, each capped at 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. The index is discovered via robots.txt and submission; child sitemaps are fetched on demand.
| Field | Guidance |
|---|---|
| <loc> | final canonical URL |
| <lastmod> | accurate, not auto-updated |
| <changefreq> | hint only |
| <priority> | relative hint |
Keep lastmod honest
lastmod should reflect the actual last meaningful change. Forcing it to today on every crawl to trigger re-indexing is discouraged and degrades the signal's value.
Frequently asked questions
How many URLs can one sitemap hold?
Up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. Beyond that, split into a sitemap index referencing multiple child sitemaps.
Should I list noindex pages in the sitemap?
No. A sitemap should list only indexable URLs. Listing a noindex page creates a contradiction between the sitemap and the page's own robots directive.
